The Hesston Museum
Hesston Steam Museum is a unique outdoor museum featuring one of the most varied collections of steam equipment of its kind in the country. The collection includes stationary and traction engines, a steam-operated sawmill, and steam train rides on full-sized and scale model locomotives through 155 acres of natural meadows and forests.  Open weekends with special events Memorial Day, Labor Day, and 2nd weekend in August.

The City of LaPorte, also called “the hub of Awesome” has many unique attractions:

– a rare and extensive gun collection as well as a rare car collection

The La Porte County Historical Society Museum is home to several permanent exhibits including:
• W. A Jones Collection of Ancient Weapons – encompassing nearly 850 weapons purchased all over the world.
• Kesling Auto Collection – consisting of more than 30 vintage automobiles ranging in age from a 1903 Winton to a 1982 DeLorean.
• Belle Gunness Display – A serial killer believed responsible for as many as 40 murders between 1884 and 1908.
In addition, the LaPorte County Historical Society will host it’s 7th Civil War encampment and re-enactment on June 13 & 14. This outdoor event features Civil War re-enactors encamped with demonstrations including crafts, artillery demonstrations, tomahawk throwing, and skirmishes are all part of the action.

Antique Shopping

– LaPorte was named the “Antique Capital of Indiana”.

Orchards, Blueberries and Farmers Markets

Northern Indiana’s LaPorte County offers a scenic drive through the countryside. In Autumn, find the perfect pumpkin patch! During the spring and summer, visit a u-pick orchard for homegrown fruits and vegetables and in winter, it’s the place to shop for your Christmas tree.

La Porte offers three beautifully landscaped and challenging golf courses. The city-owned Beechwood Golf Course is a championship 18-hole course built in the early 1930’s as a gift from the Fox family.

The LaPorte Municipal Airport is within easy access to:

  1. University of Notre Dame – if you’re headed to a football game or other function at ND, spare yourself the high cost of landing fees and fuel. Land and stay in LaPorte.
